Oslo: A Quick Stop
Our journey began with a flight from Philadelphia to Oslo. We arrived in the morning, stretched our legs with a quick walk around the city, and soaked in its charm. Despite the limited time, Oslo’s architecture and crisp air left a lasting impression. From there, we hopped on a beautiful train ride to Bergen, eagerly anticipating the next chapter of our adventure.
Bergen: A Day of Hiking and Exploration
Bergen greeted us with its iconic colorful wooden houses and lively fish market. We spent a full day hiking around the city, taking in breathtaking views from Mount Fløyen and discovering hidden trails. The fresh air and incredible scenery were the perfect introduction to Norway’s outdoor wonders. That evening, we boarded the Hurtigruten ship, excited for the coastal journey ahead.
Hurtigruten Coastal Cruise: A Journey of Highlights
The Hurtigruten cruise was the heart of our trip, and it didn’t disappoint. Each day brought new sights and experiences:
- The Atlantic Road: This engineering marvel was one of the trip’s highlights. The road’s dramatic curves and proximity to the ocean made it a sight to remember.
- Off-the-Beaten-Path Hikes: Several stops offered opportunities to venture into less-traveled areas. These hikes showcased Norway’s raw beauty and serene landscapes.
- Northern Lights: We were lucky to have multiple nights of the aurora borealis. Watching the sky come alive with color was a magical experience.
- Local Food and Drinks: From fresh seafood to traditional Norwegian dishes, every meal on the ship and in port towns was a treat. We also enjoyed sampling local craft beers and aquavit.
- Whale Sightings: A surprise highlight was spotting whales along the way. Seeing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat was unforgettable.
- North Cape: Visiting the northernmost point of continental Europe was a surreal moment. Standing at the edge of the world, with icy waters stretching endlessly before us, was both humbling and awe-inspiring.
Overnight Ferry to Copenhagen: A Final Chapter
After returning to Oslo, we capped off the trip with an overnight ferry to Copenhagen. The ferry was surprisingly comfortable, with cozy cabins and delicious dining options. We arrived refreshed and ready to explore. Enjoying Tivoli Gardens and strolling through the city were the perfect way to end our adventure.
